I’m just some dude. Not particularly smart or cool or righteous. I’m a decent father, husband, and coworker I guess. A so-so friend and family member (I’m lazy and self-centered). Not a very good “citizen” in my local community or school.
But I’m happy.
I’ll chalk some of it up to my circumstances which are good (solid job, family, friends, life in the suburbs). But I think the majority of my happiness comes from having the right perspective and knowledge. Some of it I’ve gained or evolved on my own. But most of it has come from friends, family, mentors, and even strangers, gathered in conversations, witnessed in others, or read in some book or article. I’m a collector of happiness-inducing philosophy.
And I love to share it. It makes me happy when I do.
I’m reminded of a quote I heard somewhere, but in 10 seconds of Googling can’t find the author of:
“There will be world peace when everyone decides to be peaceful”
I love that. It says that world peace isn’t some external thing that will be delivered to our species one day. It’s not about the right laws or success or system. It comes from all of us, the collective result of what we think, say, and do.
Isn’t happiness that way too? When we all learn how to be happy, the world will be a happy place. Let’s get on that people! One relationship, one moment, one day at a time. I’ve found some tools that have helped me. I hope they help you.
